The Marquis de Lafayette 1757 – 1834 American Revolutionary War General
Because he was only 19 years old, Congress did not promote Lafayette over more experienced colonial officers. Lafayette's willingness to volunteer his services without pay won their respect, and he was commissioned as major general on July 31, 1777.
