Polk was the first "dark horse" candidate to win the presidency. A dark horse is a horse that is not well known before a race and therefore difficult to determine the odds for. Despite being the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Polk was not well known nationally. He beat three more popular candidates for the Democratic nomination in 1844.
