During his time living on Walden Pond, Thoreau was arrested by a tax collector because he had not paid his taxes in six years. Thoreau refused to pay money to the U.S. government because of its involvement in the U.S.- Mexican War. He spent a night in jail but was freed because his aunt paid his taxes for him.
