During the 18th century, the Enlightenment ushered in an era of new political thought, which in turn set the tone for the ideas of modern political thought. This period, also known as the Age of Reason, was a period where European thinkers and philosophers questioned traditional ideals and beliefs. Many essays, books, and laws were written during this period. The Enlightenment was divided into different periods, some of which are shown below.

The philosophies of these individuals led to the framework for democracy, one of the most widespread political ideas in the world.
Thomas Jefferson relied upon John Locke’s political theory of natural rights while writing the Declaration of Independence. The phrase “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” reflects Locke’s ideas while defining the foundation of a new nation. The United States has since become the most powerful democracy in the world.
As democracy increasingly spread across the world, opposition to this form of government also increased. This opposition has led to some of the most tumultuous conflicts in history and produced some of the most powerful political leaders in history.
