The first factor to take into account would be the Persian Gulf region as a crossroads between Europe, Africa, and Asia. Whoever controls this region controls the flow of trade between the various nations/states in the area. An additional example would be the access to major bodies of water. Whoever controls this region controls access to several major rivers, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean. There are several areas that could be considered choke points. If you cut off one, you cannot access the other which could give you a military or economic advantage over others in the region. Lastly, is this region's greatest natural resource, oil.
