Millions of immigrants, seeking economic opportunities and political freedoms, also flocked to America’s cities. While these changes brought many benefits to America, they also produced challenging problems. The Progressive Era was initiated as a result of these problems.

Industrialization is the process of creating a commercial industry. This change required more mechanized and standardized work which led to poor working conditions for the unskilled labor.
Urbanization is the process of city growth and development. This led to overcrowding and people living in tenements. Neighborhoods turned into slums.
Immigration is the process of people moving to a new place to stay permanently or at least for a long time. These new immigrants needed jobs, decent housing, education, and other social services.
