In 1814, both sides were working toward a peaceful resolution to war. British and American representatives met in Ghent, Belgium, on December 24 and signed a peace treaty. However, fighting continued at the Battle of New Orleans because word of the peace treaty did not reach them until January 8, 1815.

As a result of this treaty, the United States gained influence and recognition as a legitimate foreign power.
