In the years following World War II, a bitter conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union brewed, bringing the two superpowers and their respective allies to a constant brink of war. The conflict between communist and democratic ideologies would last for nearly half a century. The Cold War, as it was called, began in 1945, just as World War II ended.
