Hurricanes are classified based on their maximum wind speeds. There are five categories, with Category 1 being the lowest strength and Category 5 being the highest strength. This rating scale is called the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale and named for Herb Saffir and Robert Simpson who developed it.

The table below shows the categories and the winds speeds for each category.
