In previous lessons, you learned about percents.

A percent is a special part-to-whole ratio that describes the number of parts per 100

Because a percent is a ratio, you can use what you know about ratio and proportion to solve percent problems.

In this lesson, you will learn how you can do each of the following:

Determine the percent that a part of the whole represents. For example, if 33 out of 60 people like going to the movies on the weekend, then 55% of people like going to the movies on the weekend.
Determine the part that a percent of the whole represents. For example, if 60% of students speak both English and Spanish at home and there are 240 sixth grade students at Wilson Middle School, then 144 students speak both English and Spanish at home.
Determine the whole from a percent representing a given part. For example, if 24% of Ms. Mikulski’s students attend after-school tutorials and 18 students attended after-school tutorials, then Ms. Mikulski has 75 students.
