In this section, you will create prisms and compare their volumes.

This activity might not be viewable on your mobile device. Interactive exercise. Assistance may be required. The image below is a screenshot and link to an online applet tool that you will use. Click on the image to launch the applet in a new window/tab.

Be sure that the Draw Grid box is checked and Explore Mode is filled in.

At the bottom there are sliding bars to select the width, depth, and height of the prisms and a place to select Rectangular prism. The volume and surface area are calculated for you.

Create each of the designated prisms. In your notes, answer the questions below noting how the changes of the dimensions of the first prisms affected the volume.

To check your answers, click on the blanks.

Example 1

Prism 1 Length = 1 Prism 2 Length = 4
  Width = 1   Width = 2
  Height = 1   Height = 3
Volume __________ Volume __________

How many dimensions were changed? __________

Scale factor(s) __________

Scale factors or volume change? __________

Example 2

Prism 1 Length = 2 Prism 2 Length = 3
  Width = 1   Width = 1
  Height = 3   Height = 1
Volume __________ Volume __________

How many dimensions were changed? __________

Scale factor(s) __________

Scale factors or volume change? __________

Example 3

Prism 1 Length = 1.5 Prism 2 Length = 6
  Width = 1.5   Width = 6
  Height = 2   Height = 8
Volume __________ Volume __________

How many dimensions were changed? __________

Scale factor(s) __________

Scale factors or volume change? __________
