In your previous math classes, you may have studied how to solve problems by representing them in different ways. Using a picture or diagram, a graph, or an equation can make the problem easier to solve. Depending on how you learn or what type of problem you have to solve, some representations are easier than others.

Example Problem

Beatrice bought a storage box for her patio. She wants to paint the exposed sides of the box. How much surface area does she have to paint?

2 ft by 1.5 ft by 4 ft Rectangular Solid

Picture Representation

Draw and label a picture that will show the pieces of the problem that will lead to a solution.

Beatrice will paint each of these rectangles.

Rectangular Net with labels

Equation Representation

Choose one or more formulas that you will use to solve the problem.

Use the lateral surface area formula plus the area of rectangle for the top,

LSA = (perimeter of base)(height)

SA = (4 + 1.5 + 4 + 1.5)(2) + (4)(1.5)

Verbal Description

Write a sentence or two to describe your plan for solving the problem.

Find the area of each side that will be painted and add them all together.
