A mathematical sentence/statement states a fact that is judged to be "true" or "false."
Example: Are the following mathematical sentences? Move your mouse over "Yes" or "No."
Mathematical sentence/statements containing variables are considered open sentences, and their truth value is dependent on the value replacing the variable.
Example: 7x + 15 = 36 is an open sentence because it could be either true or false depending on the value of x.
Example: "It is my favorite song" is an open sentence because "it" is an unknown and could be either true or false depending on what "it" is.
Mathematical sentence/statements with no variables that can be evaluated as true or false are called closed sentences.
Examples:
A Conjunction is when two or more mathematical statements are joined together by the word "and" to form a compound mathematical statement.
Example: 100 + 55 = 155
A triangle is a polygon with three sides
Conjunction: 100 + 55 = 155 and a triangle is a polygon with three sides.
Conjunction using mathematical symbols: p ^ q this is read: p and q
A Conjunction is only true if both or all statements joined by the word "and" are true.
A Disjunction is two or more mathematical statements joined by the word "or" are true.
Disjunction: 100 + 55 = 155 or a triangle is a polygon with three sides
Disjunction using the mathematical symbols: p v q this is read: p or q
A Disjunction is true if either or any of the statements joined by the work "or" are true.
